It
is the city of the twenty miles.
Being located along the
Francigena road, which used to
link Rome with northern Europe
in the Middle Ages, San Miniato
was at the crossroad between
Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena
and in the middle of an area
which, within twenty miles,
enclosed San Gimignano,
Volterra, Pistoia and Vinci. It
was the birth town of Matilde,
the Countess of Canossa, and the
town chosen by Frederick II of
Svevia, as well as where
Napoleon Bonaparte had his roots.
San Miniato offers a rich
architectural and artistic
panorama which varies from the
Middle Ages to modern times. The
landscape of Tuscan hills
surrounding it and the richness
of the territory, which produces
specialities such as wines,
meats and white truffles, add to
its urban beauties.
