An
old maritime republic
overlooking the Mediterranean
Sea and crossed by the Arno
river, Pisa is known worldwide
for her Leaning Tower, situated
in the magnificent frame of the
Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of
Miracles), where you can also
admire the Cathedral, the
Baptistery, the Monumental
Cemetery and visit the Museum of
Opera del Duomo and the Museum
of Sinopie.
Pisa
is the birthplace of one of the
oldest Italian universities, of
the Scuola Normale Superiore
and, today, host to
international research centres (CNR,
Virgo, …). In order to enjoy
Pisa you have to walk through
the streets of its historic
centre to the Piazza dei
Cavalieri di Santo Stefano (Knights’
Square of St Stephen), the
Mercato delle Vettovaglie
(Vettovaglie Market), through
the streets of Borgo and
Mercanti, to the Lungarni (Arno
embankments) where you reach the
Museo Nazionale di S. Matteo (National
Museum of St Matthew) and the
Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale
(National Museum of the Royal
Palace) along with many modern
buildings that partially reveal
the old structures of the
typical medieval turreted-houses.
At
the end of this tour walk, in
the more modern district of
Sant’Antonio, you can admire
the latest mural by the American
artist Keith Haring.
