Calci
is located at the feet of the
Mounts of Pisa, in a valley
called Valgraziosa. The north of
Calci is protected by the peak
of the Mount Serra (917 mt). The
south-east is defended by the
remains of the Florentine
Verruca fortress (537 mt). Since
ancient times, Calci has been
famous for its watermills and
olive trees which, still today,
produce one of the best
extra-virgin olive oils of
Tuscany. One of the most
beautiful Carthusian monasteries
of Europe is in Calci. It was
founded in 1366 and restored in
the Baroque style in the
eighteenth century. An
interesting Romanic parish
church and less renowned
monasteries and hermitages are
hidden by its rich vegetation.
Moreover, the birth place of
Pope Eugene III, in the world
Bernardo Paganelli, who promoted
the second crusade is preserved
in the old quarter of Montemagno.
